Columbus High School students gather in celebration

About 100 students wearing specially made t-shirts gathered outside Columbus High School this morning to celebrate the decision to reinstate Dr. Marvin Crumbs as principal.

The students stood arm in arm singing and cheering their support of the school board’s 7 to 1 vote to overturn the superintendent’s reassignment.

The Wednesday vote ended a weeklong controversy over Dr. Crumbs’ reassignment.

Kasich Unhurt In Multi-Car Crash Near Columbus

Ohio Gov. John Kasich was involved a minor vehicle accident on Tuesday just outside downtown Columbus, but was uninjured, a spokesman said. Kasich spokesman Rob Nichols said four vehicles were involved, but he called the incident a minor fender bender.

The first-term Republican governor’s doctor was to examine him as a precaution, Nichols said. Two administration staff members, a JobsOhio employee and the state trooper driving the vehicle also were not hurt.

Hejduk hangs up boots for role in Columbus

Ohio might seem an awfully landlocked state for Frankie Hejduk to call home, but the lack of surf doesn’t matter so much when that’s what feels like home.

After wrestling with decision to end a career that spanned 12 seasons and included 85 caps for the US national team and two World Cups (1998, 2002), Hejduk official called it quits Thursday, beginning the next phase of his life by being introduced as Columbus’ first-ever Brand Ambassador. “It was time,” Hejduk said.

Columbus man faces drug trafficking charges

A resident’s watchful eye and two diligent police officers led to the arrest Tuesday of a suspect accused of drug trafficking who also was arrested back in February during a two-day drug sweep.

Shawn D. Agee, 43, of Columbus, was arraigned Wednesday on misdemeanor charges of possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia and felony charges of aggravated possession of drugs, trafficking in cocaine and possession of cocaine. He is in Fairfield County Jail on a $500,000 cash or surety bond.

Columbus sends 2 to Springfield for AHL playoffs

The Columbus Blue Jackets have assigned forwards Cam Atkinson and Maksim Mayorov to their affiliate in Springfield, Mass., for the American Hockey League playoffs.

Columbus General Manager Scott Howson announced the move Sunday, a day after the Blue Jackets wrapped up their season with a 7-3 victory over the New York Islanders. Atkinson scored two goals in that game and had an assist.

Columbus Soldier Dies In Afghanistan

A Central Ohio soldier died in Afghanistan this week. According to the Department of Defense, Staff Sgt. Christopher L. Brown, 26, of Columbus, died April 3, in Kunar province, Afghanistan.

He died of wounds sustained after he was attacked with an improvised explosive device while on a dismounted patrol. Brown was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colo.

Columbus Commons getting $50M

An Atlanta developer has signed on for a $50 million project to build apartments and retail space along the High Street side of the Columbus Commons park downtown.

The developer, Carter, is expected to break ground in late August on a project that will include 300 apartments over 23,000 square feet of retail space in three six-story buildings between State and Rich streets, Capitol South Community Urban Redevelopment Corp. CEO Guy Worley said.

Columbus Blue Jackets beat Detroit Red Wings

The Red Wings knew they would face a much tougher version of the Columbus Blue Jackets after Detroit routed them Monday at home. They were right, and weren’t up for the challenge.

Allen York stopped 29 shots and earned his first NHL victory in an emergency start, and the Blue Jackets beat the Red Wings 4-2 on Wednesday.

Columbus teens to compete in res contest

Four Columbus Area Career Connection students have a shot at national honors after winning a state restaurant management competition for high schoolers.

Columbus students Brayden Grider, 16; Nathan Henderson, also 16; Whitney Michael, 15; and Jacob Waddle, 17, will compete against teams from more than 30 states in the restaurant management category at the National ProStart Invitational from April 27 to 29 in Baltimore.

Zoo staff begins medical testing of 5 creatures

Veterinarians from an Ohio zoo are performing medical tests on the five exotic animals held there since their suicidal owner released them in October.

The Columbus zoo began caring for three leopards, two primates and a bear after their owner released dozens of animals that had to be killed by authorities near Zanesville. One leopard was euthanized after being struck by a door lowering between two enclosures.
