Ohio might seem an awfully landlocked state for Frankie Hejduk to call home, but the lack of surf doesn’t matter so much when that’s what feels like home.

After wrestling with decision to end a career that spanned 12 seasons and included 85 caps for the US national team and two World Cups (1998, 2002), Hejduk official called it quits Thursday, beginning the next phase of his life by being introduced as Columbus’ first-ever Brand Ambassador. “It was time,” Hejduk said.

Mallory, Columbus Mayor Wager Ice Cream

If Cincinnati loses, Mallory has to send Coleman a bunch of Graeter’s ice cream. If Cincinnati wins, Mallory will receive from Coleman a bunch of Jeni’s Splendid ice cream.

The teams play at 9:45 p.m. in Boston. “The Cincinnati Bearcats are a great source of pride for the entire city,” Mallory said. “I’m confident that UC will prevail and march on to the Elite 8. I just hope Mayor Coleman sends enough Jeni’s Ice cream for the entire team.”

She was one of the nation’s best volleyball players, hailing from the unlikely hotbed of Wasilla, Alaska.

She had heard nothing of this rivalry thing between Michigan and Ohio State, but given that Alaska is on the other end of North America from Ann Arbor and Columbus, that’s pretty understandable. More >
